Heavyweight Hoodie Buying Guide (2026)
Not all hoodies are built the same. A thin hoodie lasts a season; a heavyweight one becomes the piece you reach for every day for years. Here is what actually matters when you buy one.
1. Fabric weight (GSM)
GSM — grams per square meter — is the honest measure of a hoodie's substance. Anything under 300 GSM is midweight. True heavyweight starts around 350 GSM, and premium pieces run 380-450 GSM. Heavier fabric drapes better, holds its shape, and shrugs off daily wear.
2. Fleece type
| Type | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Brushed fleece | Soft, fuzzy interior | Warmth, everyday wear |
| Loopback / French terry | Smooth loops, lighter | Layering, milder weather |
| Heavyweight jersey | Dense, structured | Clean minimal looks |
3. Construction details
- Double-lined hood — holds its shape instead of collapsing.
- Flatlock seams — lie flat against the skin, no chafing.
- Ribbed cuffs and hem — keep the fit locked in wash after wash.
- Kangaroo pocket — reinforced stitching so it does not sag.
- Metal-tipped drawcords — small detail, big difference in longevity.
4. Fit
A great heavyweight hoodie is cut relaxed through the body with a slightly dropped shoulder. It should skim, not cling. Sleeves reach the wrist; the hem sits at the hip. If you are between sizes, size down for a cleaner look.
5. Care
Wash cold and inside out, skip the bleach, and tumble dry low or line dry. Quality fleece gets softer with every wash — treat it well and it will outlast everything else in your drawer.
